When Marco emails me and says I need a favor, I say no problemo. After all, he is of Team Brooklyn MTB fame and part of the way back machine. He is also a great guy with a big heart. Did I mention he is an amazing photographer as well?
Today I received an email from my compadre sharing this story. Tracy Lea has been involved in the bike scene for over two decades. While she has been a force in growing and supporting women's cycling over the years, she is also a humanist and mother. I had the privilege of watching her son Sid race as a youth while at the same time seeing his brother Bobby rise to track stardom. Observing Tracy raise a son with a disability and another an Olympic star, has been amazing. Tracy's love and support of her children is equal and her passion to see them both succeed in life is clear. Tracy's influence shines in their confidence and demeanor. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting these young men...job well done!
So it comes as no surprise to hear that Tracy is on the move helping another cyclist reach his goals. Tracy discovered this young man at the Pan Am games. He was horribly disfigured as a child when he was electrocuted retrieving a kite from electrical wires. He is now in the U.S. thanks to Tracy's hard efforts and willingness to help another human being whom she was touched by. Damian is awaiting facial reconstruction surgery and will also be fitted for prosthetics so he can compete in the Paralympics. I don't want to re-write the story. My hope is that you will follow the link and check it out for yourself.
Sometimes people become overwhelmed by the problems of the world and feel they are too big to take on themselves. I believe if we start small we can make big changes. Tracy's actions are a clear indication that it doesn't take much to make a difference. Just a willingness to show true caring for another and a little bit of her time. And of course, a mother's love...even if it's not your own child.
